The home crowd had a good time watching the Anchorage Whalers and Phoenix Mavericks get after it.

The Phoenix Mavericks beat the Anchorage Whalers, 5-0, at Chasefield. Starting pitcher Jerry Galvan was a big reason why. He held his opponent in check all game. Galvan, now 4-3, was the winner. In 6.1 innings, he gave up 6 hits, while striking out 8, walking 0, and allowing no runs.

The Mavericks got an important contribution from third baseman Steve Johnston, who in the bottom of the third knocked a 2-2 fastball into left for a 2-run double. It was his 11th double of the season and put the Mavericks ahead, 3-0.

Galvan told a Phoenix Citizen reporter that he was "gratified" with the win.

The triumph puts Phoenix at 25-25 for the season.
