Cavaliers Come Back Late, Nip Monongahelas
|
Columbus left-hander Jason Merritt pitched his team to victory over the Pittsburgh Monongahelas at Forbes Field. The final score was 3-2. Merritt went 8 innings to notch the win. He scattered 8 hits, walked 1, and struck out 2. His record improves to 5-3. Columbus raised its record to 37-27 with the win.
Had Rich Howard not delivered a key base hit in the top of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 2nd, Howard hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 3-2, in favor of the Cavaliers.
"We made a couple of mistakes," said Pittsburgh skipper Lookie Wookie, "and it cost us."
