Valdovino Helps Whalers Beat Missionaries, 8-6
|
The Anchorage Whalers grabbed a win, 8-6, over the Salt Lake City Missionaries at Grounds. Anchorage designated hitter Tony Valdovino went 3-4 with a home run and 2 singles. He scored 2 times and drove in 4. Anchorage reliever Mike Watkins got the win, raising his record to 3-2. Rich Mercado was tagged with the loss. Bill Park earned the save for Anchorage, his 11th.
Valdovino had a game-changing home run in the bottom of the eighth. On a first pitch sinker from Rich Mercado, he banged a 2-run home run to left, giving the Whalers a 8-6 lead. It was the 8th home run of the year for Valdovino.
"It wasn't a pretty victory," said Valdovino, "but we got it done."
The victory puts Anchorage at 23-49.
